Climbing Mauao (Mount Maunganui) requires moderate fitness; a flat base loop alternative is available for those who prefer not to summit. Two long private-coach travel days are involved (Auckland–Rotorua via Waitomo/Hobbiton, and Mount Maunganui–Auckland) — plan your energy levels accordingly.
